If you son or daughter is a keen AFL fan and their birthday coincides with the September footy finals frenzy, why not capitalize and have an AFL footy themed birthday party.
At the end of the home and away season, AFL team merchandise is usually on sale so check out your team store at Subiaco Oval, at specialty merchandise stores and keep an eye open for online sales on the club websites as well. In Perth, don’t take it for granted that guests will be either Dockers or Eagles supporters. Be sure that all clubs are represented if you are going to use club merchandise as prizes.
K Mart, Target, Big W and discount stores like The Reject Shop, Red Dot and Best and Less have a huge range of Dockers and Eagles paraphernalia at reasonable prices as well as a token range from other clubs.
On the invites, ask the children to come dressed in their team colours or as their favourite football hero. If you are a one eyed supporter, you may choose to use your household’s team colours or the team your birthday child supports for invites, table and house decorations.
Choose a park or oval for the venue. Check with your local council regarding hire arrangements. You may be able to use the clubrooms, which would facilitate heating and serving food, just like at a real footy match.
Organise a game of footy Ozkick-style, goal kicking and handball competitions, and set up a circuit of fun ball-oriented activities to wear the kids out and work up an appetite.
Suggestions for food include pies, pasties, sausage rolls, sausage in a bun, hot dogs, chicken rolls, pizza or any of the range of fast food, all easy to cater for and in keeping with the football theme. Make the birthday cake in the shape of a football, or decorate the top like an oval with goals at each and or simply decorate a butter cake in club colours.
If you’d rather outsource the entertainment, we’d recommend GymBus to organize the games inside their Double Decker play centre.
